Early Years

Our youngest students, aged 3 to 5, begin their journey in a warm, play-based setting that follows the Early Years Framework, building early language, literacy, maths and essential life skills so they grow into confident, independent learners ready for Primary.

Our curriculum

Our EYFS curriculum provides the foundation for every child’s school journey, blending academic readiness with wellbeing, curiosity and confidence.

Rooted in the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, it is delivered through Aspen’s child-centred, inquiry-based approach, where each learner is placed at the heart of the curriculum.

Communication and Language

Building confident communicators from day one

Children are immersed in a language rich environment where talk, stories, songs and role-play are part of every day.

In small groups and whole-class activities they learn to listen carefully, take turns in conversation and express their thoughts clearly, building the confidence to speak in a range of situations.

Communication and Language

Personal, Social, Emotional Development

Positive relationships, positive mindset

In Aspen’s nurturing Early Years environment, children develop a strong sense of self and a growing confidence in their own abilities.

Through play, shared routines and guided reflection, they learn to manage their feelings, show respect for others and understand how to behave thoughtfully in a group, laying the foundations for wellbeing and resilience.

Personal, Social, Emotional Development

Physical Development

Active, healthy and ready to learn

Children have daily opportunities to move, climb, run and explore both indoors and outdoors, developing balance, coordination and control.

Through PE lessons, swimming and practical activities, they begin to understand the importance of being active, making healthy choice and looking after their bodies.

Physical Development

Literacy

Stories, sounds and early writing

Surrounded by books, poems and rich storytelling, children start to link sounds and letters and take their first steps into reading and writing.

Through playful, structured activities they handle books with confidence, recognise familiar words and begin to record their ideas, discovering that print carries meaning.

Literacy

Mathematics

Number sense through meaningful play

Mathematical thinking grows as children count, sort, build and compare in everyday classroom and outdoor activities.

They explore numbers, shapes, spaces and measures in real contexts, talking about what they notice and using simple calculations to solve practical problems.

Mathematics

Understanding the world

Curious about people, places and the environment

Children make sense of their world by exploring their classroom, school grounds and wider community.

Through hands-on investigation and inquiry, they find out about people and places, use simple technology and observe changes in the natural environment, developing early scientific and geographical thinking.

Understanding the world

Expressive Arts and Design

Creativity in every corner of the classroom

With access to a wide range of media, materials and instruments, children express their ideas through drawing, painting, music, movement and role-play.

They explore colour, texture, sound and story, experimenting freely and sharing their thoughts and feelings through imaginative, open-ended activities.

Arabic Language

Celebrating language, culture and identity from the very beginning

In Early Years at Aspen Heights British School, children are introduced to Arabic in a warm, engaging environment that nurtures confidence and curiosity. As part of the school’s inclusive and multicultural community, all children — both native and non-native speakers — begin to develop their Arabic language skills through age-appropriate experiences that support listening, speaking and early communication.

Guided by experienced teachers and aligned with the Ministry of Education curriculum, lessons are designed to be interactive, playful and meaningful. Through songs, stories, conversations and visual resources, children begin to explore the sounds and rhythm of the language in ways that feel natural and enjoyable.

As their confidence grows, pupils are introduced to the richness of Arabic language and culture through authentic materials such as books, storytelling and creative classroom activities. Early exposure to elements of Arabic heritage helps children build familiarity with the language while strengthening their connection to the culture and traditions of the UAE.

In keeping with Aspen Heights’ child-centred, inquiry-led approach, Arabic learning in Early Years is rooted in exploration, participation and a sense of belonging — helping every child take their first steps as confident communicators in a diverse school community.

Greg Bottrill child-led learning philosophy

At Aspen, we embrace Greg Bottrill’s child-led philosophy, recognising young children as capable, curious learners who thrive through exploration, play and inquiry. In calm, nurturing spaces, teachers act as responsive co-learners, using children’s interests and questions to shape meaningful, cross-curricular learning that builds confidence, independence and a genuine love of learning.

Drawing club

Drawing club is a daily, story-rich experience where children immerse themselves in imaginative tales, develop vocabulary and express ideas through drawing before moving into marks and early writing. This playful approach helps children see themselves as authors and illustrators, significantly boosting their confidence, storytelling skills and motivation to write independently.

Karen Wilding play-based Maths

Using the Karen Wilding approach, children encounter maths naturally through hands-on play, daily routines and real-life contexts, alongside short, focused group sessions. They explore number, pattern, shape and problem-solving in meaningful ways, building secure mathematical foundations, confidence and a positive attitude to maths from the very start of their school journey.

Read, Write, Inc. Phonics

Read Write Inc. is our structured, systematic phonics programme, delivered in daily, fast-paced sessions carefully matched to each child’s stage of development. Through explicit teaching of sounds, blending and segmenting, children quickly grow in accuracy, fluency and confidence, leading to strong early reading skills and increasingly independent, successful writing.

I have been so impressed with my daughter's level of development in Phonics even though she is the youngest in her class in FS2. She has developed a rich vocabulary through Drawing Club and is already starting to read words.

I know so many big words now. I know the meaning of 'metamorphosis' and 'concocting' . My teacher says my brain grows every time I learn a new word!

My teacher is so kind to me even when I make mistakes. She told me it is ok to keep trying and I will get it right in the end. This is why I feel like I am so smart.
