A student-led Mental Health Ambassadors Programme, recognised at the Mentl Awards 2024 for Outstanding Mental Health Initiative in Education, empowers trained secondary students to promote wellbeing, peer support and resilience across the school.
Selection & invitation
Interested secondary students are identified and invited to apply or be nominated as Mental Health Ambassadors, showing empathy, reliability and a genuine interest in wellbeing.
Training & preparation
Ambassadors receive specialist training from the school counsellor in active listening, emotional intelligence and mental health awareness, so they can support peers safely and confidently.
Peer support in action
Trained Ambassadors offer a friendly, non-judgemental point of contact for classmates, helping them talk about worries, signposting support and encouraging healthy coping strategies.
Awareness & advocacy
Ambassadors help lead campaigns, assemblies and themed activities that normalise conversations about mental health, reduce stigma and promote resilience across the school.
Ongoing reflection & growth
The programme is reviewed regularly with the counsellor and student leaders, refining training, planning new initiatives and ensuring student voice shapes future wellbeing priorities.
Students who need extra help with English benefit from specialist classes, personalised targets and close monitoring, helping them build confidence, fluency and full access to the curriculum.
Specialist provision
Learners build English confidently through specialist classes, small groups and targeted support that align with everyday classroom learning.
Personalised language plans
Students follow personalised language plans with clear targets that guide tailored support in specialist sessions and everyday classroom activities.
Progress tracking
Learners’ English development is monitored closely using EAL frameworks, termly assessments and daily teacher observations to guide next steps.
Students who need extra English join English Support or Non-Native classes, often in small groups, so teachers can focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening at the right level. Lessons target key vocabulary, grammar and subject language linked to what students are learning in class, helping them participate more actively and access the full curriculum.
Assessment information is used to set individual language targets in speaking, listening, reading and writing. These are captured in Elevation Plans, which outline next steps and strategies for support. Plans are reviewed regularly and adjusted as students make progress, keeping provision focused and responsive.
Teachers use BELL Foundation descriptors, termly assessments and classwork evidence to track each learner’s English development. Insights feed directly into updated targets and Elevation Plans, ensuring support stays effective and aligned with classroom expectations.
Pastoral care and counselling
Students are supported by a pastoral care team that makes sure they and their families feel heard. Aspen Heights offers a specialist identification and intervention programme for SEND, 1:1 confidential counselling, group work sessions and social emotional learning lessons.
The school counsellor also runs family workshops, shares weekly wellbeing resources with parents, and coordinates external referrals to ensure continuity of care beyond school.
Crisis response and first aid
In moments of crisis, students can access immediate, informed support from two qualified Adult to Adolescent Mental Health First Aiders on the pastoral team.
These staff members are trained to respond to mental health emergencies, provide initial care and guide young people towards appropriate follow-up support, helping to keep students safe and reassured during difficult times.
Staff and family wellbeing
Our staff benefit from a social committee, a Buddy Programme and an open door policy that fosters connection and support. There is in-house training on children’s mental health, with access to the school counsellor for tailored advice.
Families can join workshops focused on parenting and children’s mental health. Regular training for all staff on recognising mental health decline and caring for their own wellbeing keeps the whole community informed and supported.
Aspen Aspire Pathway
The Aspen Aspire Pathway is Aspen Heights’ programme for high-performing students, offering personalised challenge, leadership roles and academic extension from Primary to Sixth Form. In Primary, students are selected using GL assessment scores in at least two areas, attendance above 95%, CAT4 data and teachers’ judgement that they are role models.
In Secondary, Aspire students gain extra leadership opportunities, targeted mastery learning sessions and priority access to enrichment trips. In Sixth Form, they benefit from advanced mastery sessions, senior leadership roles and enrichment experiences that support top academic outcomes and preparation for university and future pathways.
The school has given me lots of opportunities to be a leader. I have been the UAE Ambassador for the last three years and was recognised in the Gifted and Talented Programme for my sports ability. These experiences have helped me grow in confidence, responsibility, and teamwork, both inside and out of the classroom.
Sultan Year 10, Student
We support all children through quality first teaching and by immersing children in a language-rich curriculum.
We request parents to inform the school at application stage regarding any additional learning support requirements for their child. We may request copies of external documents such as professional assessments, individual learning plans, and one to one learning requirements which will be reviewed by our Head of Inclusion. Based on these, we offer a range of inclusive provision to support students with additional learning needs. This includes three dedicated Oasis classes designed to provide specialised support for students with more complex needs. In addition, we welcome and support students with additional needs within mainstream classrooms, with adjustments and individual support provided with or without a learning assistant, depending on each child’s individual requirements. Our approach ensures that every student is supported in a way that enables them to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.
Our teachers are always available for a quick word at the start and end of each day and parents can always make an appointment if a longer discussion is needed. We ensure that families are fully informed of what their child is learning in school through Class Dojo and Google Classroom. We also make sure families know how they can help at home through weekly newsletters and termly meetings. We also have regular family workshops in all areas of the curriculum.
Experience award-winning care at Aspen Heights British School. Recognised with the Carnegie Centre of Excellence Gold Award and the Mentl 2024 Outstanding Mental Health Initiative, our support helps every child thrive, grow in confidence and flourish.
