At Aspen Heights British School, sustainability is a way of thinking, learning, and living together every day. From our hydroponics greenhouse and Animal Kingdom to student-led eco-enterprise projects and recycling initiatives, learners of all ages explore how their choices impact the world around them.

Sustainability is embedded across learning at Aspen Heights - from inquiry-based PSHE in Early Years to curriculum-wide work with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, fieldwork in Humanities and ESS, and an annual Science and Sustainability Fair where students design real-world projects to protect the planet.
Junk Kouture sustainable fashion
Students take part in the Junk Kouture initiative, transforming everyday ‘junk’ and recycled materials into wearable art. This after-school activity highlights creativity, upcycling and waste reduction.
ISP Changemakers Programme
As part of the ISP International Learning Opportunities for Students, Aspen learners join the ISP Changemakers Programme, collaborating on real-world sustainability challenges with peers across the globe.
‘Yalla Return’ smart recycling initiative
In partnership with Tadweer, Aspen has installed ‘Yalla Return’ smart recycling bins outside the school and Yalla Return bags in every classroom. Students, staff, parents and the wider community collect recyclables, track their impact and earn points, making technology-enabled recycling part of everyday life.
Single-use plastic ban
Aspen operates a full ban on single-use plastics. Students and staff use reusable water bottles and refill stations across the school. Staff are encouraged to bring reusable coffee mugs to the reception barista café. At community Iftar events, families and staff bring their own plates and cutlery - making low-waste, reusable habits part of everyday school life.
Sustainable displays and décor
Aspen reduces waste by reusing hessian displays year after year, creating stage props from recycled materials and implementing strict print controls that limit staff to 500 pages per month - prioritising digital solutions wherever possible.

Hydroponics greenhouse
Students grow plants in our hydroponic greenhouse, seeing first-hand how up to 90% less water can be used compared to traditional farming while learning about sustainable food systems.
Animal Kingdom
On-campus spaces for tortoises, chickens, fish, snails and other small animals turn everyday routines into live lessons about biodiversity, responsibility and care for living things.
Energy-smart buildings
Heat-reflective film on building exteriors and a naturally ventilated swimming building reduce the need for air conditioning, helping students see how design choices cut energy use in real time.
Recycling infrastructure
Yalla Return collection points and clearly organised recycling areas across campus make sorting waste simple and visible, encouraging responsible habits throughout the school day.
Refill and reuse stations
Water bottle refill points and a café culture that favours reusable mugs help normalise low-waste choices and show students how small daily actions protect the environment.
Sustainability is woven throughout learning at Aspen Heights - from inquiry-based PSHE in the Early Years to cross-curricular exploration of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Students engage in fieldwork through Humanities and ESS, and each year showcase real-world environmental projects at the Science and Sustainability Fair, designing solutions to help protect the planet.
Beach clean-ups
Staff, students and families take part in weekend beach clean-ups, with IBDP students supporting Al Bahya Beach through CAS. These experiences build awareness of marine pollution, responsibility and teamwork.
Local community clean-ups
Students lead litter-picks near school, sorting waste to maximise recycling. The projects build practical waste-management skills, community pride and a sense of positive action.
Mangrove trips with service elements
Students visit Jubail Mangroves Park for kayaking, ecosystem learning and litter-picking. The trips connect biodiversity learning with teamwork, resilience and care for nature.
Community Iftar with sustainable practices
Families and staff bring reusable plates and cutlery to Community Iftar events, reducing single-use plastics. This helps students see how sustainable habits can be part of everyday cultural celebrations.
Our programme brings learning to life as students care for animals on campus, building empathy, responsibility and real-world understanding of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
In our on-campus Animal Kingdom, students care for tortoises, chickens, fish, snails and other small animals as part of their everyday learning - a distinctive Aspen experience that brings our strong eco-focus and wellbeing ethos to life.
This is not simply about observing animals, but about understanding ecosystems, developing empathy and building a deep respect for living things through authentic, hands-on care.
Students take an active role in feeding, maintaining habitats and monitoring the animals’ wellbeing, connecting directly with themes of sustainability, life cycles and environmental stewardship that run through our curriculum.
They see first-hand how their daily routines, choices and responsibilities make a tangible difference - echoing our wider approach to learning, which is inquiry-based, child-centred and rooted in real-world understanding.
The Animal Kingdom programme also nurtures essential life skills that Aspen values across the whole school. Caring for animals encourages patience, teamwork and compassion, while giving students regular opportunities to lead, solve problems and communicate effectively.
Above all, it helps them understand that wellbeing extends beyond people to the wider natural world, reinforcing Aspen’s identity as a close-knit, sustainability-minded community where every student is known, supported and empowered to care for their environment.
