Arabic - MOE curriculum
Arabic is taught in line with the UAE Ministry of Education curriculum and is embedded throughout the school. Students develop strong literacy, fluency and an appreciation of local heritage, with carefully sequenced learning from the early years through to the upper grades.
Students become increasingly confident in Arabic, actively participating in class, presenting stories and taking part in competitions such as ABT and BSME with enthusiasm. Teachers see clear growth in their literacy, creativity and real-life language use.
English
English is the core language of learning and communication across the school. From the earliest years through to IGCSE and the IB Diploma Programme, students develop strong skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
A rich, literature-based curriculum, combined with explicit teaching of vocabulary and grammar, supports academic excellence in every subject and prepares learners for success in international examinations and further study worldwide.
Spanish
Spanish is introduced as a modern foreign language from Year 3 to Year 6, giving students a strong foundation in speaking, listening, reading and writing. It continues from Year 7 to Year 9, where students deepen their skills and prepare for further study.
Spanish is then offered in the IB Diploma Programme, supporting students in achieving advanced proficiency as part of their Post-16 pathway.
French
French is offered as a modern foreign language from Year 3 to Year 6, building early communication skills and cultural awareness.
It is then available as an IGCSE subject in the upper years, with structured preparation leading to formal IGCSE French examinations that recognise students’ achievement and language proficiency.
Through a rich mix of language experiences, we help students build the skills and resilience they need to thrive.
Students complete regular language assessments in reading, writing, speaking and listening, with clear grading criteria aligned to MOE, IGCSE and IB expectations.
This gives families a transparent view of how their child is progressing in each language.
Where appropriate, learners sit international benchmark assessments such as GL Progress Tests and CAT4 verbal assessments. These help us compare progress over time and ensure Aspen Heights students are meeting - and often exceeding - global standards.
Teachers at Aspen Heights bring together daily classroom observations with classwork and assessment data to understand each learner’s language journey.
By monitoring how students communicate in real contexts and tracking their progress over time, teachers spot gaps early, tailor support and celebrate meaningful, long‑term growth in every language.
Students in English Support or Non-Native classes receive personalised targets and tailored assessments to accelerate fluency.
For EAL learners, progress is tracked using BELL Foundation descriptors, informing Elevation Plans that are specific, measurable and fully aligned with classroom learning.
Across the school, students use Chromebooks, iPads and tools such as FlashAcademy, Widgit and AI-powered platforms to practise vocabulary, reading and speaking in engaging ways.
These technologies complement high-quality teaching and give learners additional, interactive ways to build their language skills and confidence.
Students at Aspen Heights lead the way through our Language Ambassadors and Young Interpreters programme, where multilingual learners support new and existing peers, help welcome newly arrived families and champion a culture of linguistic pride and inclusion across the community. Around 60 Language Ambassadors take part, collectively representing more than 20 languages spoken at Aspen Heights.
At Aspen Heights, multilingual celebrations bring the whole community together, with students leading performances, language activities and cultural celebrations throughout the year. On International Day, they showcase more than 60 nationalities through stories, songs and food.
During UAE National Day, they honour the Emirati heritage with Arabic poetry, music and traditional dress. Iftar gatherings and Arabic Week deepen this connection, as families join students for shared meals, calligraphy, recitation and Arabic-led activities that celebrate identity, build understanding and strengthen our sense of belonging.
Our Multilingualism programme at Aspen Heights British School encourages students to take pride in their home languages while developing genuine respect and curiosity for the languages of others.

I love being a Language Ambassador because I get to help other students feel brave when they try a new language. It makes me proud to share my culture, teach new words and see my friends smile when they learn something new.
